Soulblighter crashes @ game start/MacOS Catalina

Post by Frumius »

First, Hi to anyone from long ago! I've been away for a long time, but I was always there back in the day. And second, thanks for helping out!

On a 2019 iMac 27" running latest Catalina OS 10.15.4

In trying to get some Myth II back on, I have a couple hiccups:
1) Some solo levels are available, but not all, and not consecutively. I thought they'd be available as I completed them. It crashes on some levels and not others.
2) Willow Creek is available, but a crasher: after the scrolling narration the game crashes back to the OS.

and D) (we'll call it), The Great Library did work, but it kicked my butt! And it wasn't even on Total Carnage,or Legendary -- whichever Myth was (one was Marathon). Obviously I have a lot of rust to knock off.

I have the crash log to the most recent crash. I can try various things if it helps figure it out. Thanks for taking a look and your time, I appreciate it:

I believe this only happens if you have cutscenes enabled, or any cutscenes in your Myth II folder.

The problem is that QuickTime is no longer part of Mac OS X in Catalina. Any attempt made to call the QuickTime frameworks in an app will leave you with, rrreeeeooooowwww, ker-splat. As you see with Myth II on Mac OS X.

Workaround is to play without cutscenes, which is a bit of a bummer. I think the new-ish macOS movie player framework is AVFoundation, with its own codec and container mess that a few someones will need to sort out on their spare time.
