This may be a known issue in the D3D path related to task switching (alt-tab, etc). You have a modern system though, so try using either the DirectX 10/11 renderer or the OpenGL renderer - they do not have the same problem.

Thanks for the report. punkUser is right on, this is a known issue with D3D that happens when you alt-tab back into the game while the map loading progress bar is showing. It has been fixed already in the 1.8 betas actually. Since you're on windows 7 with a geforce 8800 GT though, there's no reason not to use OpenGL. It doesn't have this issue, and is also superior in many other ways.

Need to educate users to only use OGL and DX

This user likely had a reason to switch to D3D. If you look at his old posts, he had reported issues while using DX. He was given information on how to possibly deal with some of that, but it seems he never replied back to answer if it worked out in the end.
